They had been given shelter by her husband - Dayashankar, who was very fond of kids. Dayashankar had created a trust for the children which provides the funds to Savitri to run the place. She cannot even sell the property on her own because it belongs to the trust and the trust cannot sell it too as long as the children are there.
Savitri does not hate these kids but believes in a lot of discipline and thus shields her sentiments and puts forth a hard appearance to keep them in control. These seven kids are a bunch of brats, always up to some prank or mischief which irritates and enrages Savitri. The kids don’t hate Savitri but they get immense pleasure in troubling her as she believes in high level discipline and they being kids are of the opposite nature. Savitri has a trusted helper called ‘Poster’ who is obsessed with Hindi films and all his references bear the stamp of this.
Kripashankar (Savitri’s brother-in-law) and Tarneja (a big builder) are the ones who are after Savitri’s plot and try to convince her to sell her plot and build a high rise building which she is not keen on. But for that they have to first disband the orphanage, which Savitri is opposed to.
The two men then plant their person ‘Paro’ as a cook so that she can create a rift between Savitri and kids, so that the kids decide to probably run away or it could be proved that Savitri can’t run the place and the trust decides to close the place. Either which ways the trust will then sell the plot.
On the other hand, the Chief trustee also sends his son Rishabh to find out the inner details of the orphanage and whether Savitri is taking proper care of the children or not.
