Idhu Oru Kadhal Kathai from K. Balachandar is a love story between two people from completely different backgrounds. This is a love story of Janaki and Sakthivel. Janaki is a middle class Brahmin girl. Her father dreams of his daughter as an IAS officer.
Janaki meets Sakthivel who is a Devar boy by accident. She falls in love with Sakthivel and he reciprocates. Their love intensifies as time progresses. The love of Sakthivel and Janaki is not welcome by their parents.
Obstacles come one after the other for the lovers, but they overcome all the hurdles and unite in life. Their love, their Struggle, sustaining the love amidst the conflicting environment forms the crux of the story.
Sakthivel’s family lives in a village with his father Ayya Devar. His family is different from the others in village. The reason is Ayya Devar’s family has been a big family constituting nearly 45 members of all age group. He believes in values and thinks living together is the way to live.
To keep the family members so, Ayya Devar has his own set of rules. His most affectionate son is Sakthivel, to whom Ayya Devar had decided to pass on the mantle. But Sakthivel’s love for Janaki has repercussions on the family. The whole concept of a ‘joint family’ is under threat. Ayya Devar faces numerous problems, which he has never even dreamt of.
It’s now the responsibility of Sakthivel and Janaki to keep the family members intact and their love for each other. The story unfolds as to how the they face all problems. Janaki’s family is also not happy with their daughter falling in love with a Devar community boy. They feel the tradition and sentiments of their community is hurt by this relationship.

Characters
Sakthivel - Sakthivel is a young man who is the main character of this love story. He is Ayya Durai’s second wife’s son. He is a stubborn, honest and open minded person loved by all the family members. He respects every relationship. Torn between obligation to his family and the love for his beloved Janaki, Sakthivel has a hard time in sharing, caring and holding the family ethics and rules of his father strong and together all the time.
Janaki - Janaki is Sakthivel’s love interest. She comes from a middle class Brahmin family, pursuing her IAS degree to fulfill her father’s wish. Longing for love in her life, as her family members are caught up in their own life. She is soft and sensitive but has the ability to face a storm. She is reday to face anything in love for the happiness of her beloved Sakthivel.
Ayyadurai - Ayyadurai is the head of the joint family and Sakthivel’s father. A very stubborn man, who holds joint family traditions in very high regard and will not let anything break the family especially love marriage. A kind hearted person, he sees both sides to any problem. All his family members hold him respect and follow him.
Kannakalingam - He is Ayyadurai’s brother-in-law. Kannakalingam is the strategist of the family. Though he seems like a very jovial and lighthearted person on the outside, he is a very calculative.
Vishwanatha Iyer - He is Janaki’s father who works in the postal department. He strongly believes that a person can achieve status and respect in a society only with the strong foundation of higher education. His hopes of higher education are completely pinning on his daughter as his sons have disappointed him.
Parimalam - She is Kannakalingam’s daughter who is madly in love with Sakthivel. She has been brought up with the dreams, that she will one day marry Sakthivel, but her hopes are crashed when she discovers Sakthivel’s marriage to Janaki. She is the major threat to Janaki’s happy marital life.
Chinnadurai - He is Ayyadurai’s younger brother. Like his brother, he holds in high regard the tradition of a joint family. Though the brothers have similar views on a subject, the way they handle them is what tells them apart. A very short tempered person, is feared by all in the family.
